Both terror suspects in Las Vegas and New Orleans were in the U.S. military. One a veteran and another active duty. In fact, according to new research, military service members whether former or current have been responsible for a whopping quarter of mass casualty events. So when can we talk about the U.S. military as a radicalizing force in our culture?

Matthew Livelsberger, responsible for the Cybertruck explosion outside of the Trump hotel in Las Vegas, was an US Army Green Beret who deployed in multiple tours to Afghanistan and suffered from depression. A known Trump supporter, in a number of letters he wrote before the attack he bemoaned income inequality and argued that Democrats should be taken out possibly by force.

Then there's Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who killed 15 people in New Orleans with a rented truck, who served in the Army for over a decade and also deployed to Afghanistan. His car was found with an ISIS flag and he allegedly carried out the attacks inspired by the organization.

But both of these suspects were born in the U.S. and served for many years in the military. So what gives? Why is this an ever-recurring pattern?
