Mayor elect Zohran Mamdani’s recent appearance on Meet the Press has caused a stir among progressives. When asked whether Mamdani would support Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker of the House if the Democrats regain control in 2026, he quickly responded, “Yes.” Most of the Democrats voter base is sick and tired of the feckless, AIPAC-backed “leadership” from Jeffries in the House and Schumer in the Senate, so it’s no surprise that people are frustrated by this answer.
That being said, it’s too early to be saying that Zohran is throwing the left under the bus. The man isn’t even Mayor yet, and he continues to affirm that his focus is primarily on New York City, not Washington D.C. Right now the pressure is on for him to succeed as mayor, when there are many who want his brand of politics to fail. Wanting him to singlehandedly save the Democratic party overnight is probably asking a little too much, at least right now.
