My education left a void where my history should have been. I learned the simplified, single-story of Black people—a narrative of oppression that peaked in February and ignored our profound contributions, joy, and intellect. This omission didn’t just leave me uninformed; it left me disconnected from a vital part of my own identity.

My own education was a tale of two worlds. In the classroom, Black history was a quiet, contained unit, a brief detour in February before returning to the "regular" programming. I learned about the same few towering figures, whose heroism was presented as an exception to the rule of oppression. They were safe, sanitized, and solitary.

Our demands are specific:

1. Move Beyond Heroes and Holidays: We demand an end to the "siloed" Black history that reduces centuries of experience to a few painless figures. Our children deserve to explore the systems of power and economics built by enslavement, the ideas born in the Harlem Renaissance, and the everyday brilliance of Black Wall Streets and HBCUs that built communities in the face of violent exclusion. Black history is not a separate chapter; it is woven into the very fabric of American history, math, science, literature, and art. It must be taught as such.

2. Fund the Truth: This initiative requires dedicated, permanent federal and state funding for authentic resources. We demand investments in textbooks that tell the full story, in primary source archives, and in partnerships with historians and cultural institutions that have been preserving this truth for generations. Our classrooms must be equipped with tools for reality, not mythology.

3. Invest in Black Educators: Most critically, we demand funding and policy for the recruitment, training, support, and retention of more Black educators. A textbook can provide facts, but it cannot provide the lived experience, the cultural nuance, and the inherent understanding that a Black educator brings into the room. For students of all backgrounds, seeing a Black teacher as a shaper of minds and a holder of knowledge is a powerful corrective to the stereotypes they unconsciously absorb. For Black children, it is an affirmation of their own possibility. Their presence is not a bonus; it is irreplaceable.

This is about more than education; it is about repair. It is about giving every child in America the gift I had to find for myself: the unshakable knowledge that our story is not one of a footnote, but a foundation.
