Citizenship Won’t Save Us From Fascism

In this episode, I’m challenging the way we’ve been taught to understand the law. After attending an event centered on immigration, storytelling, and legal advocacy, I started thinking more deeply about a question I believe we have to sit with: is the law actually a neutral tool for freedom, or has it always been used to legitimize colonial violence, anti-Black violence, Indigenous erasure, and state power?

I’m not saying the law doesn’t matter. Black, Indigenous, immigrant, and marginalized people are often the most impacted by it, whether we believe in it or not. What I am saying is that we cannot talk about the law through a romanticized lens that ignores the violence that made this country, its borders, and its legal system possible.

In this conversation, I break down how legality has been used to justify slavery, land theft, broken treaties, Japanese internment, voter suppression, criminalization, deportation, and the ongoing violence faced by Black, Indigenous, and immigrant communities.

I also ask whether citizenship should really be treated as the goal, or whether citizenship was supposed to be a tool toward something deeper: safety, dignity, autonomy, freedom, and justice.
