History is the Foundation of Action: My political and moral compass is rooted in the intellectual tradition of Black thinkers from Frederick Douglass to Malcolm X. Understanding this history is not academic; it is essential to understanding the systemic nature of today's problems. As Senator elect, these are the principles that will guide my legislative agenda.
Education is a Material Reality: The fight for educational equity begins with the basics. If a child cannot see the board or is poisoned by lead in their own home, no curriculum can save them. We must address the physical and environmental barriers to learning through comprehensive federal investment.
Redlining is a Ghost That Haunts Us Today: The segregation of the past is not over. It is structurally embedded in our property tax system, which continues to determine the quality of our schools. I will fight to decouple school funding from property taxes and ensure every child has access to quality education.
The Real Lead Poisoning Is in the Walls: While the crisis in Flint was tragic, it is a symptom of a larger, more pervasive problem. The greatest threat from lead is not just in the pipes but in the legacy paint of aging homes. I will introduce comprehensive federal lead abatement legislation that addresses both sources.
Your Tax Dollars Are a Statement of Priorities: When resources are sent overseas to fund destruction while communities at home lack clean water and adequate schools, it is a clear indication of whose lives are valued. I will fight to redirect those funds to rebuild our own infrastructure and communities.
