"President-elect Joe Biden was just weeks away from his inauguration when he turned to his slate of Justice Department nominees and said, "You won't work for me."
"You are not the president or the vice president's lawyer. Your loyalty is not to me," Biden said in early January, flanked by now-Attorney General Merrick Garland and other Justice Department nominees who have since been confirmed.
It was a pledge to restore the integrity and independence of a Justice Department that former President Donald Trump was accused of treating like his personal law firm.
But Trump hasn't made the Biden Justice Department's work easy.
In recent months, several cases and investigations leftover from the Trump era have tested the new Democratic administration as it seeks to restore the Justice Department's independence and keep it out of the political crucible."
