"Jamaica plans to seek billions in reparations from the UK over the transatlantic slave trade, a senior government official said.
Ministers in the former colony, once a major centre of the trade, say ‘redress is well overdue’ as they announced their petition.
An estimated 600,000 Africans were forcibly shipped to the Caribbean island to work on plantations, first by Spain then Britain, from the 17th to 19th centuries.
The sugar cane, bananas and other crops they harvested created fortunes for their owners, while they were treated as less than human."
