‘Elon Musk's 'Starbase' city prompts local concerns as SpaceX awaits vote on status
"BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Elon Musk's proposed city concept, named Starbase, is on the brink of becoming a reality as residents prepare to vote on its official city status.
However, the proposal is not without its critics, as many people feel the city is the billionaire's version of a company town, and locals are concerned that it will give the corporate giant more power over local property.
The proposed city, primarily composed of SpaceX employees, would stretch from the Texas coast inland along Highway Four. If approved, residents will elect a mayor and two commissioners, all of whom are connected to SpaceX and running unopposed.
Local landowner Rene Medrano expressed concerns about access to the area, saying, "People want to go to Mars. Let them go to Mars. There's people that want to go to the beach and enjoy Boca Chica Beach. Okay, let's compromise."
