Texas Senate primary election results 2026

"Republicans are headed to a runoff that will prolong a nasty, intraparty fight over who competes in November to represent Texas in the Senate. Democrats, meanwhile, picked James Talarico, a state representative and Presbyterian seminarian they hope will boost their odds. Republicans have dominated the state for decades, but Democrats see an opportunity this year to make the race competitive — especially if the GOP nominates a scandal-plagued candidate.

Republican primary

Sen. John Cornyn — who has represented the state in Congress for more than two decades — narrowly led Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton with most votes counted, while Rep. Wesley Hunt trailed far behind in third. Because no candidate won more than 50 percent of the vote, Cornyn and Paxton will advance to a runoff in May.

Cornyn’s allies in Washington have argued that Paxton’s personal scandals make him vulnerable in a general election and would force the GOP to spend heavily to retain a red-leaning seat. Cornyn’s camp dramatically outspent its rivals to head off that prospect, and Cornyn did better than many Republicans expected on Tuesday. But Paxton is betting he has more appeal with the party base."
