DOGE Staffer Tasked with Eliminating 'DEI' Grants Struggles to Define DEI in Awkward Deposition Video
"President Donald Trump's rapid-fire elimination of "diversity, equity, and inclusion" programs is coming under new scrutiny this week, after deposition videos were released for some of the staffers who were called to testify about their effort to eliminate more than 1,400 National Endowment for the Humanities grants.
The depositions were taken as part of a lawsuit brought by the Modern Language Association (MLA), American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), and American Historical Association (AHA). The organizations allege that the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE — which was spearheaded by Elon Musk for the first few months of Trump's second term — used flawed and discriminatory methodology to determine which grants and programs should be eliminated.
The staffers reportedly ran a list of DEH grants through ChatGPT, instructing the program to flag for elimination any that included DEI buzzwords like “BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color),” “homosexual,” “LGBTQ,” and “tribal,” among others."
