First Liberty founder pleads guilty in Georgia Ponzi scheme case that targeted conservatives
"NEWNAN, Ga. — The founder of First Liberty Building & Loan, Brant Frost IV, pleaded guilty to a federal wire fraud charge Tuesday in the case involving a $140 million Georgia Ponzi scheme that largely targeted conservative retail investors.
Frost IV, one an influential powerbroker in conservative evangelical politics in the Peach State, will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge May on August 14.
His criminal case was announced less than a month ago by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Atlanta, following a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) lawsuit filed last year as well as a state investigation.
First Liberty had promised returns up to 16% by making high-interest "bridge loans" to businesses. Brant Frost IV, an evangelical powerbroker, touted “Wall Street returns for Main Street investors.” But he skimmed $17 million for himself, his relatives and their affiliated companies, and loaned millions more that borrowers never repaid, an SEC lawsuit claims."
