Mo Gawdat, the former Chief Business Officer at Google X, reveals that the odds of AI wiping out humanity are between 10-20% which is the same probability as a bullet in a six-chamber revolver. He then explains why, despite those odds, he believes AI is humanity's salvation.
Mo walks through what he calls the fourth inevitable. If every company that develops a more intelligent AI deploys it, and every competitor must match it or become irrelevant, then by definition we reach a moment where every important decision is made by AI, not humans. He says this is not a prediction. It is a simple prisoner's dilemma that has only one mathematical outcome.
He then makes his most controversial argument: a superintelligent AI will not want war. Using the minimum energy principle from physics, he explains that war is the most wasteful process imaginable, destroying resources, lives, and stability. A truly intelligent system optimising for efficiency would eliminate conflict entirely. He draws on evolutionary biology to support this: the more intelligent a being becomes, the wider its circle of concern expands. An amoeba protects only itself. A squirrel protects its kin. Humans protect their communities. A superintelligent AI, he argues, would protect everything, including humans.
