Why Is Making Friends as a Grown-Ass Man So Damn Hard? (Also known as: *The Loneliness Epidemic Nobody’s Talking About*)

Let’s cut the crap—male loneliness is real, it’s rampant, and it’s killing us.

Literally. Studies show loneliness is as bad for your health as chain-smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Yeah, fifteen. And over half of Americans report feeling lonely and isolated—which, let’s be honest, is wild in a time when you can connect with 1,000 strangers in a single thumb swipe.

But here’s the rub: Men are taught from day one to be self-reliant, emotionally constipated lone wolves. Be tough. Don’t need anyone. Suck it up. Cry into the steering wheel of your elevated truck like a man.

And what happens? We lose friends as we age. We move for jobs. We go through divorce. We avoid hard conversations. We suck at repair. Before you know it, you’re staring at a six-pack on a Friday night with no one to drink it with—and not in the good way.

So the big question is: What the hell do we DO about it?

Join me, Dr. John Schinnerer, in a deep, honest, and damn useful conversation with Sean Doyle—poet, lawyer, positive psychology professor, and all-around badass—about how men can start building *real* friendships in adulthood. Not fantasy football “I know your favorite team but not your soul” friendships. We’re talking meaningful, connected, “I got your back when life punches you in the face” kind of friendships.

About My Guest:

John “Sean” Doyle is a poet-lawyer-happiness-wizard hybrid. He’s worked with everyone from Buddhist monks to Army drill sergeants to federal judges, helping people inject more joy, meaning, and resilience into their lives. Dubbed “the poetic voice of positive psychology,” Sean’s book *Mud and Dreams* is a love letter to the beautiful mess of being human.

He’s taught psych at NC State, holds degrees in philosophy, law, and positive psychology, and somehow still finds time to raise three kids. Basically, he’s the guy you want in your foxhole and at your dinner party.
