Hey folks, Dr. John here with another episode of The Evolved Caveman Podcast, and boy, do we have a wild ride for you. Joining me today is Rebecca Chandler, a badass author, survivor, and advocate. Her memoir 'It Won't Hurt None' is a jaw-dropping narrative of conquering some of the darkest pits of trauma to find hope and healing. Dealing with Multiple Personality Disorder, also known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), and Complex PTSD thanks to years of childhood abuse, Rebecca shares her Herculean journey of misdiagnosis, therapy, and reclaiming her lost fragments. Spoiler: She even had badass names for her alters (that’s the name for the other personalities)! Stick around as we dive into her horrific experiences and groundbreaking healing methods, explore the nuances of trauma and trust, and discuss how menfolk can pitch in to support sexual abuse survivors. So rock your headphones and get ready for a deep, irreverent, and eye-opening discussion. Don't miss it!
The old term is Multiple Personality Disorder. (MPD) The new term is Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Different terms for the same psychological condition - a core self surrounded by a myriad of other personalities that vary in age, personality, sex, and temperament. Normally, MPD develops as a result of severe and repeated trauma at a young age. This trauma causes the core personality to split and develop a second personality to protect the core self and absorb the abuse. This pattern continues depending on the individual and the type of abuse suffered.
Most of us look at people with MPD as mentally ill. And it’s true, there is some psychological healing to be done there. BUT, what if we are ALL a little bit multiple personality disordered? That is the premise of a relatively new psychological approach known as Internal Family Systems. Tune in now to find out more about all of this incredibly fascinating psychological phenomena!
