Democrats’ post-election soul searching isn’t limited to the moderate crowd. In the wake of Donald Trump’s victory, “squad” member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic Congresswoman representing parts of Queens and The Bronx, asked her Instagram followers if any of them voted for both her and Trump, and why.
Inspired by AOC’s solicitation of insight from split-ticket voters, our roving reporter Ben Kawaller recently spent an afternoon in and around Hunts Point, a Bronx neighborhood where Trump picked up around 25 percent of the vote (in 2020, his share was around 15 percent). He was looking for—and found!—Trump/AOC voters, as well as other residents who helped shed light on why among these black and Latino residents, the Democrats’ 2024 candidate didn’t do as well as the old white man they ran in 2020.
