Michael Chernew says medicare as a program has been a central lifeline for seniors, ensuring they have access to high quality care. He says most healthcare in the U.S. has been provided by employers so medicare has done a tremendous job of providing broad access to people no longer in the work force. On Medicare For All, Chernew believes, how people feel about it has to do with individual thoughts on government's role in healthcare. According to Chernew if you take "Medicare for all" literally and put everyone on medicare, pricing would be substantially lower, which is both a benefit and a risk. Chernew, who works with the Dept. of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School, says the challenges faced with medicare are largely fiscal. He says the current challenge of the medicare program is that it does not provide incentives for efficiency.
