The recommissioning of Ladder 1, among several improvements to the department made possible through a $22.4 million grant from FEMA, carries a special poignancy, because that company will serve Philadelphia’s Fairmount neighborhood. In January, 2022, a fire in one of that community’s rowhouses killed 12 people, including 9 children.
