According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mental health conditions now account for nearly a quarter of all maternal deaths in the United States, and one in eight new moms experiences postpartum depression.
Postpartum depression is a health condition that can occur up to 1 year after having a baby, but most commonly starts 1-3 weeks after childbirth. It is often characterized as strong feelings of sadness and anxiety. Moms may also experience a loss of appetite, insomnia, and difficulty bonding with their baby.
Why is postpartum depression so often undiagnosed? What can be done to prioritize action to create a better future for moms, babies, and families?
The Hill will convene administration officials, lawmakers, maternal mental health advocates, and medical experts to discuss America’s maternal mental health crisis and how to fix it.
