Lemond, 64, took on the moniker of the first U.S. winner after Lance Armstrong and Floyd Landis were disqualified amid doping allegations. He finished first in three separate races: 1986, 1989, and 1990.
His medal was approved for the Congressional Gold Medal — one of the highest civilian awards — in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the ceremony.
He is scheduled to receive the award at 11 a.m. EDT.
