CDC Director Susan Monarez, who was confirmed to the role just last month, was fired Wednesday after she refused to step down following calls from Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. amid disconnect over vaccine recommendations. The move sparked resignations from four other top CDC officials, including the agency’s deputy director.
Lawmakers have pushed back on the firing, with some calling for oversight amid the shakeup.
The briefing also comes after Trump announced he was working with Republicans in Congress to pass a “comprehensive” crime bill, which comes amid the administration’s federal takeover of law enforcement in the nation’s capital.
