The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) — Federal Reserve officials who set its borrowing costs – cut the Fed's baseline interest rate to between 4 percent and 4.25 percent Wednesday, Sept. 17.

The reduction of 0.25 percentage points is the first such action the central bank has taken this year.

Analysts and traders widely expected the cuts to come after several months of alarming employment data and pressure from President Trump.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell had previously said he was wary of cutting rates until the inflationary effect of Trump’s tariffs sorted out.

But the fading U.S. labor market pushed the Fed to risk its progress in the fight against rising prices.
