Also on the agenda were less-pressing annoyances, such as a stalled escalator in the building and a teleprompter outage.
President Trump, addressing the assembly on Sept. 23, touched lightly on those infrastructure issues, but pressed allies and the world community as a whole to commit to policies that support shared diplomatic goals. Although Trump said he believed in the "tremendous potential" of the UN, he effectively gave it low marks for following through on its promise.
Among other leaders who spoke to the gathering over the next few days were Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
