The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday, as expected, failed to approve a GOP-led stopgap to keep the lights on. Senators also rejected Democrats’ shorter alternative.
Republican leaders remain hopeful that they can sway the five Democrats needed to advance the continuing resolution that would end the shutdown and move the funding deadline to Nov. 21. Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) John Fetterman (D-Pa.) and Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), who caucuses with Democrats, voted in favor of the bill on Tuesday.
The voting is scheduled to begin around 11 a.m. EDT.
