38:53Now PlayingHouse Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and GOP leaders will speak with reporters Wednesday morning as the government shutdown hit 36 days — making it the longest lapse in funding in U.S. history.
His remarks come as tension emerges among top Republicans on Capitol Hill over how long a stopgap spending bill should last as part of a deal to reopen the government. Johnson has floated extending the deadline and said Tuesday that he prefers a January timeframe over a measure that would only provide funding until December.
The “clean” continuing resolution passed through the House only runs through Nov. 21. The Senate on Tuesday blocked the bill for the 14th time, though some Democrats now seem to be more willing to negotiate.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EST.
