as posted by the channelThe Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee is holding a hearing Wednesday afternoon to look into the impact of the 43-day government shutdown on U.S. flight safety, travel and the economy.
During the record-long lapse in funding, the Transportation Department reduced flights for least 40 major airports across the U.S. as staffing shortages that already plagued the system worsened as air traffic controllers and other essential employees called out more often, chose to retire or were mandated to work overtime without pay.
While the Federal Aviation Administration has lifted the restrictions, the impact on airlines, passengers and the travel industry is expected to linger — even as the holidays approach.
“I look forward to discussing with industry how Congress can work to alleviate the strain on air traffic controllers and [Transportation Security Administration] agents, as well as ensure safety for passengers and sustainable operations for our airlines, general and business aviation stakeholders,” Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), chair of the committee’s aviation panel, wrote in a statement.
The event is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m, EST.
