38:16Now PlayingRep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) is speaking to reporters Wednesday afternoon about President Trump’s ramped up immigration enforcement efforts and her opposition to for-profit detention centers.
“Trump’s treatment of immigrants is beyond inhumane,” Jayapal wrote in a post on social platform X, sharing a story from Newsweek.
“That’s why today, I’m introducing my Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act to phase out our use of private, for-profit detention centers & put in place protections for immigrants’ civil & human rights,” she added.
The Washington Democrat, alongside two other lawmakers, first introduced the bill in 2023.
Her comments come as the Trump administration have raised up detention centers across the U.S. — beginning with Florida’s Alligator Alcatraz — and as the Department of Homeland (DHS) Security carries out the president’s deportation agenda. Earlier this year, Jayapal tore into DHS after a ProPublica report found that more than 170 U.S. citizens had been detained.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. EST.
