Democrats and the White House have been engaged in a back-and-forth over lawmakers' push to reform DHS's tactics when carrying out President Trump's mass deportation agenda. Dems in the Senate offered up a new proposal on Tuesday, though few details were given.
The pressure comes after two fatal shootings in Minnesota by federal agents earlier this year raised concerns over Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's handling of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations and its use of force. The criticism has led to calls for Noem to resign or be held accountable.
With the State of the Union address coming up next week, many Democrats are also eyeing ways to broadcast their defiance of Trump's policies.
Jeffries' comments also come a day after it was revealed that DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin is stepping down from her role amid the turmoil.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at noon EST.
