as posted by the channelNewly installed Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger will give the Democratic response to President Trump’s State of the Union address tonight.
In January, Spanberger was sworn in as the first female governor of the commonwealth. She previously served in Congress for six years and has worked as a Central Intelligence Agency officer.
“She stands in stark contrast to Donald Trump, who will lie, deflect and blame everyone but himself for his failed presidency on Tuesday evening. As our nation marks its 250th anniversary this summer, Governor Spanberger embodies the best of America as a mother, community leader and dedicated public servant,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said in a statement when Spanberger was announced as the speaker.
Spanberger said when she was announced that Virginians and Americans “are contending with rising costs, chaos in their communities, and a real fear of what each day might bring.”
Sen. Elissa Slotkin (Mich.) delivered the Democratic response to Trump’s previous address to a joint session of Congress in March 2025. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered the Democratic response to Trump’s last State of the Union address, in 2020.
Sen. Alex Padilla (Calif.) will deliver the Spanish-language Democratic response to the speech.
The president’s speech is slated to begin around 9 p.m. EST and Spanberger will be delivering her response at the conclusion of the State of the Union.
