The U.S. and Israeli militaries have decimated Iran's air defenses and munitions manufacturing centers, striking thousands of targets across the country. However, Iran's ruling regime remains largely intact, showing no signs of giving up the fight.
The country's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khameini, issued his first statement on Thursday, saying the Strait of Hormuz must remain closed until the war is over, a move that is roiling the global energy trade and increasing prices at the pump.
Hegseth has yet to offer an assessment on who is responsible for a strike early in the war that killed scores of girls at a school. An initial Pentagon report pointed to U.S. responsibility, according to The New York Times.
The Pentagon has also barred photographers from its briefings, reportedly due to its displeasure over "unflattering" photos of Hegseth. The Pentagon said the move was made to effectively use space in the briefing room.
