President Trump is also weighing action to take over Kharg Island — which would require putting boots on the ground in Iran. The Islamic Republic has threatened to retaliate if the U.S. invades, claiming American troops could be "set on fire," and called on regional neighbors to "eject" the U.S.
The back-and-forth comes nearly two weeks after Trump signaled the U.S. military operation was winding down.
