On Tuesday, the president announced that he's tapped Bill Pulte, currently head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, to serve as acting director of national intelligence. Pulte would keep his current position. The choice was met with concern from lawmakers in both parties, who have strong reservations about Pulte's qualifications for the job. Trump said Thursday that Pulte's appointment to DNI would be "short-term."
Trump announced Wednesday that Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche could now officially take on the role of he's filled on an interim basis.
Both nominees would require Senate confirmation.
Testifying before the House Appropriations Committee Tuesday, Blanche said that the Trump administration would no longer pursue a proposed $1.776 billion "anti-weaponization" fund, affirming a statement the Justice Department had released Monday.
The fund would have compensated alleged victims of improper legal actions in the past by the federal government. It formed part of a proposed settlement in exchange for Trump's dropping a $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS. Trump sought damages for the leaking of tax information by a former contractor for the agency. In addition to Trump himself, The Trump Organization and the president's sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump are plaintiffs in the suit.
