President Trump went to Madison Square Garden Monday to cheer on the New York Knicks in game three of the NBA finals. The president said that he enjoyed the game, but a substantial contingent of other fans apparently weren't happy that Trump attended, breaking into boos when he appeared on the arena's jumbotron.
Trump suffered a potential public relations setback during a press conference Wednesday when he said, "I love the inflation." Following that soundbite, he gave word of a program to escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, allowing the passage of 22 ships on an unspecified recent night. Trump's position has been that once the conflict with Iran has concluded, oil prices will drop.
Progress on diplomatic talks with Tehran appeared threatened early in the week. Iran and Israel exchanged fire, and Iran's downing of a U.S. helicopter prompted retaliatory strikes Wednesday from American forces. Thursday, Trump threatened further military action to take place that night, and suggested that "in the not too distant future, we will be taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points." Kharg Island is the main export site for Iran's oil.
But later on Thursday, Trump reversed course and said the additional strikes had been called off, announcing that a deal with Iran was now imminent.
