Several Congressional Democrats publicly celebrated the decision to maintain the principle of birthright citizenship, and used the opportunity to push back against what they characterized as socially divisive policies from the Trump White House.
The court's action struck down an executive order signed by President Trump on his first day in office. That order stated that a child must have one parent who is a citizen or a permanent legal resident to qualify for citizenship at birth.
NOTE: In the video, Vice President Vance erroneously refers to the ruling as 5-4.
