7:01Now PlayingHouse lawmakers face a packed legislative agenda this week before departing for the monthlong August recess, with GOP leaders aiming to advance a stopgap funding bill, kick off work on a third reconciliation package, hold a long-awaited vote on a congressional stock trading ban and finally take up an annual defense policy bill.
Republicans are expected to bring a short-term stopgap measure to the floor to keep federal agencies funded at existing levels beyond the Sept. 30 deadline, buying Congress more time to complete its annual spending bills and avoid a government shutdown. The House has passed just three of 12 appropriations bills, while the full Senate hasn’t passed any, leaving lawmakers behind schedule with only a handful of legislative weeks remaining before the end of the fiscal year.
