The race between El-Sayed and Stevens has morphed into a proxy war between the progressive and centrist factions of the Democratic Party.
Stevens, meanwhile, has the support of retiring Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) — whom she is running to succeed — former Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), among others from the Democratic establishment.
The majority of polling indicates the race will be tight. A survey the Glengariff Group conducted earlier this month found Stevens leading El-Sayed 48.2 percent to 41.4 percent among 500 likely primary voters, with 9.5 percent undecided.
