19:55Now PlayingPresident Trump on Thursday afternoon announced his administration's new initiative, dubbed "Freedom Haulers," to connect military veterans with jobs in the trucking industry.
The program will be a joint effort by the Departments of Transportation, Veterans Affairs, Labor and Defense, according to the White House. The initiative will also expand opportunities for the veterans involved to receive expedited commercial driver's licenses (CDL).
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy shared a video on social platform X outlining some of the expected benefits, while also taking a swing at migrants who work in the industry. Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order requiring drivers to be proficient in English in order to obtain or retain a CDL.
"ILLEGALS OUT, VETERANS IN," the Transportation chief wrote, using alarm emojis. "Our new campaign, FREEDOM HAULERS, is reclaiming America's highways and putting Vets in the driver's seat."
Duffy, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins, Acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling and trucking industry leaders were slated to join Trump at the announcement. One company, Werner Trucking, is also slated to unveil plans to hire 1,400 veteran drivers.
