as posted by the channelPresident Trump on Wednesday demanded that a GOP staffer be fired for making Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) look “out of it” while leading a recent Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing.
“The guy that came up to Mitch McConnell today when McConnell thought the hearing was over and started speaking in his ear for Mitch to belatedly introduce some other people, all Democrats and, by doing so, made Mitch look foolish and completely out of it, should be immediately fired!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
“This was a case where Mitch wasn’t confused, he just didn’t understand why he was being asked to do something when it was too late, and people were wrapping up to leave — They wanted to go home,” he added.
When McConnell attempted to conclude the hearing, during which Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Gen. Dan Caine testified about Iran and the Pentagon budget, the staffer approached the senator to explain that Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and John Kennedy (R-La.) still needed to ask their questions.
The Kentucky Republican responded, “Yeah, obviously there’s not a whole lot of time for a second round, so we’ll get through everybody and Senator Murkowski, I’d appreciate your taking over.”
In recent years, the former GOP leader has faced questions about his health amid a series of falls and verbal stumbles.
However, Trump said McConnell was alert during the Tuesday interaction and accused the staffer of “grandstanding.”
“His name is Robert Karem, he is a Never Trumper, and was grandstanding — trying to show how ‘important’ he was,” the president wrote, accusing the GOP staffer of having “tremendous” support from Democrats.
He later blamed Karem, who previously served in the Defense Department during Trump‘s first term, for McConnell’s opposition to terminating the filibuster and lack of support for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act — an election reform bill that would require proof of citizenship to vote.
“FIRE THE BUM!” the president wrote.
