26:45Now PlayingPresident Trump is hosting King Charles III and Queen Camilla at the White House for a state dinner Tuesday night, bringing to an end a busy day of events in Washington during the king's first trip to the U.S. as king.
The dinner comes just hours after Charles gave an address to a joint meeting of Congress, where he said that acts of violence like Saturday's shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner "will never succeed." He also highlighted America's upcoming 250th birthday.
“The story of the United Kingdom and the United States is, at its heart, a story of reconciliation, renewal and remarkable partnership," Charles told members of Congress. "From the bitter divisions of 250 years ago, we forged a friendship that has grown into one of the most consequential alliances in human history."
The king and queen also visited Trump and first lady Melania Trump at the White House Tuesday morning, participating in a gift exchange. But the broader trip has come against a backdrop of U.S.-U.K. tension.
Trump and the first lady are scheduled to greet Charles and Camilla at the White House at 7 p.m. EDT, and the state dinner is expected to begin at 8:05 p.m.
