Christian caller Ryan attempts to argue that atheists have a burden of proof because they claim to "know" God doesn't exist, but the conversation quickly goes off the rails. Despite John and Austin repeatedly explaining that atheism is simply the lack of belief in God—not a knowledge claim—Ryan refuses to accept their self-identification. The hosts patiently explain the difference between belief and knowledge, between atheism and agnosticism, and even acknowledge that some "gnostic atheists" might make knowledge claims, but Ryan conflates all these positions together. The frustration peaks when Ryan admits he himself doesn't claim to "know" God exists, only that he believes it, which is the exact same epistemological position the hosts just described for themselves. The irony appears completely lost on Ryan. What follows is a masterclass in talking past each other, with Ryan insisting the hosts believe something they explicitly deny, while accusing them of being uncharitable. This call perfectly illustrates why defining terms at the outset matters and what happens when one party refuses to accept the other's stated position.
