Caller Ben, claiming to have a master's degree in theology, attempts to argue that God is the "ground of being" and that asking if God is a being is therefore absurd. The call quickly becomes contentious when Ben struggles to define what "ground of being" even means, and when pressed by Matt to demonstrate why existence requires a grounding, Ben resorts to saying "I just think it's obvious." Matt, visibly frustrated, calls this an "admission of defeat" and expresses complete lack of impression with theology degrees. The situation escalates when Ben accuses Matt of claiming existence is obvious, which Matt vehemently denies with an expletive-laden response. Throughout the call, Ben repeatedly tries to reference things Matt said rather than defending his own position, leading Matt to accuse him of dishonesty and avoidance. After multiple warnings, Matt gives Ben one final chance to explain his position without referencing anything Matt said, but Ben immediately violates this condition, causing Matt to hang up on him and declare complete defeat. Seth and Matt conclude by discussing the poor state of apologetics and how even self-professed experts fail to defend basic theological premises.
