After admitting he can't prove God exists, he tries to defend divine hiddenness by saying God needs faith to be in relationship with people. Matt asks one question — "Is there any position you couldn't arrive at through faith?" — and Fernando concedes that no, there isn't, which means faith isn't a path to truth. From there, the call spirals into the Bible's endorsement of slavery and sexism, whether arguments invoking magic are ever equal to ones that don't, and a genuinely stunning moment where Fernando admits believers are basically just looking for ways to justify what they already want to believe. He's honest, earnest, and hopelessly outmatched.
