Kaitlin from California calls into the Sunday Show identifying as a progressive, transgender Christian-adjacent theist who follows the teachings of Jesus without claiming he's divine. Her argument: belief is a personal choice, and she chooses faith. Matt immediately introduces doxastic voluntarism — the philosophical debate about whether you can actually choose what you believe — and the call unravels from there. Jovan challenges whether any of Jesus's teachings are actually unique to Jesus. Matt walks Kaitlin through the Sermon on the Mount and asks if she agrees with all of it. She says yes. He reads Matthew 5:32. She says, well, that was a different era. Matt asks why love thy neighbor doesn't also expire. By the end, Kaitlin has revealed she's an assault survivor, admitted that people have used "God's plan" to explain her trauma to her, and said she's questioning a lot more than when she called in. Matt sends her off kindly and tells her to just follow good — wherever it leads.
