1.) Things back then were not as rosy as the article's author posits.

The author never claimed life was wonderful and peachy circa the 1950s. I scrutinously perused the article and found not a granule of evidence he was under the (admittedly pervasive) delusion that era was some kind of magical, perfect golden age when everyone shat diamonds and farted rainbows while skipping gaily through the fields all day. However, the author did rightly contend that many problems suffered today were not suffered back then. He further posits that many of these problems are due to the political and economic policies of the Reagan (and by extension) Bush administrations.

2.) All this article does is whine! It doesn't propose any solutions!

When the shit did it become supreme dictate that we're not allowed to express opinions without necessarily including solutions? There is inherent value in simply pointing something out!

3.) My life is great! Things can't really be that bad! If you're in a bad place, you can just work yourself out of it! HARD WORK! Pull yourself up by your bootstraps!

This is a mindset I see preponderantly in conservatives. This attitude shows illogic, a severe dearth of empathy, extreme selfcenteredness, and a lack of understanding of the world. I've tried explaining to these people many times, over and over, why this is illogical and borderline sociopathic but they really just don't seem to understand it. They think we live in a magical world where people have total control over their lives and surroundings, where the consequences of mistakes are minor and temporary, where everyone has equal access to opportunity, and where anyone who isn't well off is obviously just lazy. I could make the arguments against this mindset but I just don't see the point. I've argued so many times and they simply don't get it. It's as if they are immune to simple logic and fact.

Here are some facts for your faces:

1.) 1 in 7 mortgages are underwater.

2.) For every dollar you make, your CEO may be making between 400 and 1500 (in other civilized countries, that ratio is around 1/20).

3.) 50% of bankruptcies are due to medical costs and 75% of those who went bankrupt due to medical costs HAD health insurance. Health insurance CEO pay has recently exploded by 400%, mind you, during America's worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. We spend much more on health care as a percentage of GDP than any other nation.

4.) The wars will cost us an estimated 4 trillion dollars.

5.) The vast majority of Americans now make less per year than their share of the National Debt. The median income is 24K. Nearly 50 Million people are living in poverty, 10 million of which are children.

6.) Education has seen dramatic, devastating cuts and consequently, standards have plummeted. Education effects damned near everything.

7.) America incarcerates more people than any other nation on the planet.

8.) For every job there are upwards of ten applicants. En masse, college grads are heading back home because they cannot find employment. College has become a scam luring people into what is essentially indentured servitude for credit card companies. Gods help you if you default on your student loans; after penalties and interest hikes, you can end up owing several HUNDRED THOUSAND dollars!

9.) Minimum wage has not risen with inflation.

I can keep going. I have a million of these. I meticulously scour the news everyday and catalog this shit in my head.

To pretend the mess we're in now isn't the result of conservative malice (along with democrat pussiness) is silly.
