From the Piracy and Counterfeiting Amendments Act in 1982, which drastically increased the penalties for infringing records, tapes, and films, to the 2008 PRO-IP Act which increased penalties for infringement and opened the door for even greater enforcement. Even prior to the popular SOPA and PIPA, both proposed in the House of Representatives this year, the internet had already been subject to heavy regulations. The internet is far from being lawless, which can be a myth among America society.
