"After NBC News dropped a bombshell earlier this week reporting that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson referred to President Donald Trump as a “moron” and threatened to resign, cable news coverage has been rabid.
From the initial story, to Tillerson’s bizarre denial/non-denial press conference, the story has dominated cable news this week — and that reportedly infuriated Trump, according to a new report from Axios.
The report, by Mike Allen and Jonathan Swan, claims that “Trump’s relationship with Tillerson is broken beyond repair,” and that CIA director Mike Pompeo is being floated by advisers as a possible replacement for the beleaguered secretary of state.
And there was one thing in particular that drew the president’s ire, per Axios:
After what Trump considered a strong trip to Vegas, he seethed when he got back and saw Tillerson’s gaffe dominating cable-news coverage. Everywhere he flipped, there was Tillerson’s face instead of his.
As has been extensively reported, Trump is no fan of sharing the cable news limelight, and things have not ended well for officials that take up too much of it.
But, Tillerson may still hang on for now: “White House Chief of Staff John Kelly wants stability, and so is discouraging high-level departures before next year,” Axios notes.
