But this isn't just another Trump lie - it's a dangerous test of how far authoritarian narratives can stretch before facing consequences. When Presidents start deploying troops to places that don't exist to solve problems that don't exist, we're entering dangerous territory.
Chicago's Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker are rightfully pushing back against this federal overreach. The real miracle isn't Trump's fictional shopping center - it's how Chicago has reduced violence through evidence-based community policing and social investment, all while fighting right-wing fear-mongering.
This is how authoritarianism works: start with seemingly absurd claims, normalize them, then use them to justify extreme responses. When we accept presidential lies about public safety, we normalize the authoritarian agendas that follow.
