Harry Wait Faces Possible Prison Sentence Following Election Fraud Convictions
In 2022, Harry Wait used Wisconsin's MyVote absentee ballot portal to impersonate Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Democratic Racine Mayor Cory Mason, requesting their absentee ballots be sent to his own home address without their knowledge or consent. Wait received Mason's ballot and hand-delivered it to the Racine County Sheriff — then held a press conference to brag about it. Rather than arrest him, Sheriff Christopher Schmaling praised the stunt on social media. It took state Attorney General Josh Kaul two months to bring charges. At trial, Wait took the stand and testified he acted "to save the republic." Under cross-examination, he told the prosecutor he could have ordered 1,000 fraudulent ballots. The jury convicted him in three hours.
The irony runs all the way to the bottom. Wait's felony conviction means he can no longer vote — unless the conviction is overturned on appeal or his rights are restored after completing any sentence. The self-styled defender of election integrity is now disenfranchised. Election officials also noted that the vulnerability Wait claimed to expose was never a real threat — the error would have been caught regardless. He didn't expose anything. He just committed a crime. U.S. Senator Ron Johnson publicly praised Wait as a "white hat hacker" in 2022. That endorsement belongs in this story permanently. Wait faces up to seven years in prison. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
