Donald Trump called Virginia's redistricting vote "rigged." Then someone pointed out he's the one who started the mid-decade gerrymandering arms race. Here are the receipts.

In 2025, Trump pressured Republican-controlled legislatures in Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio to tear up their existing congressional maps and draw new partisan ones — mid-decade, no census, no justification beyond protecting his House majority. Republicans added nine Republican-leaning seats.

On April 21st, 2026, Virginia voters approved a constitutional amendment redrawing the state's congressional maps. Democrats went from six of eleven seats to a projected ten of eleven. Trump called it rigged.

Ari Fleischer — George W. Bush's White House press secretary — publicly said Republicans "should not have started this fight."

The party that wrote the rulebook is losing the game. By one seat.
