He's now suing the Department of Homeland Security with the Institute for Justice — and three days after filing suit, ICE detained him again. He's not alone. ProPublica documented more than 170 U.S. citizens held by immigration agents this year alone.
Army veteran George Retes, an Iraq War deployee, was detained for three days during a California farm raid. No charges. No hearing. No explanation. The government spent two decades and millions of dollars creating REAL ID — a national identification standard specifically designed to prove who you are.
Now immigration agents look at a valid government-issued ID and say it's not enough. If your name sounds Latino, your citizenship is apparently negotiable. And the same government that demanded you prove your identity now refuses to accept its own proof.
