Oklahoma Regulator REFUSES to Admit Their Oil Well Is Poisoning a Family's Home

In Oklahoma, the Meredith family’s home has been inundated with black, oily, toxic brine — "produced water" laced with heavy metals and salts that is coming up through their floorboards, while gas readings inside their bathroom have hit explosive levels.

Despite having test results confirming the sludge is petroleum wastewater from a poorly plugged 1940s oil well, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission (OCC) — the state agency responsible for oil-and-gas regulation — has consistently refused to officially confirm the source. Why? Because acknowledging the liability would land squarely on the agency.

The OCC has told the family to file claims with an insurance policy it knew contained "pollution exclusion" clauses, and publicly downplayed the waste as "water," even as it avoids legal responsibility.

This is the reality of state-level regulation: the state officially admits to about 19,000 orphan wells, while federal researchers estimate the real number is more than 300,000 — meaning the agency is off by a factor of roughly sixteen. About half of everyone living in Oklahoma right now is within one mile of an oil-and-gas site.

When you have a disaster in your living room, the agency isn't there to help you; it's there to protect its donors.
